Our Week in the Forest
As we step into October, a new forest of wonderful and vibrant colours unfolds before us - inviting us to wander and revealing new stories to the most inquisitive minds. This week, our little explorers have been more curious than ever. Every adventure walk has been an opportunity to pay attention to every detail. None of the little forest folk-ers have missed a thing! - From the most agile squirrels moving from the ground to the canopy in the blink of an eye, to the most beautiful white point-tailed fox sneaking into their secret dens.🦊🐿️🍂
What better way to learn about the intent of this week, related to 'Understanding the World', than being actually a witness outdoors in the real world? There are no screens that can tell you all that we can see, feel, smell and touch in nature. This week, we explored different textures using natural resources and discussed where to find them, describing these features with adjectives. We sorted a variety of materials into various categories, including spiky pine needles, velvety leaves, smooth conkers and rough bark. We used pine needles to decorate hedgehog crafts made of cardboard and sticky tape. Inspired by the forest creatures and their secret spots, some children created a den for their spiky and adorable little animals. 🦔🌳🌿
In the forest, as in real life, less is more. And sometimes, what people take for granted is simply a real treasure. In Fulham Palace Gardens, an autumn landscape is more than enough to have lots of fun. This week, our curious explorers led our adventure walks and took us to the most colourful tree in the open green. While many played football and ran freely, we all ended up covered by vibrant crimson leaves. We enjoyed throwing them into the air as if we were using confetti poppers! 🍂🍁🍃
Also this week, we went on a road trip! We had a fabulous converted camper-van at camp, complete with a small, cosy bed behind the driver's seat and a fully equipped kitchen. We pretended to have afternoon tea inside using our tea set and also shared our favourite books. We discussed various countries near England where we could drive. We pretended to cross the Euro Channel and voilà! We were in France! We also shared information about the different countries we have visited for holidays, such as Portugal and where some of our families are from, like Spain and Germany. 🚐⚒️📚☕️
At the end of the week, we went sailing! We had an impressive boat, as this time we went beyond Europe! We had our Atlas and many children decided to visit Japan, Singapore and South America! Our educator, Vasiliki, brought her compass and we learned all about orientation, understanding what are North, South, East and West. We also talked about constellations as a way to navigate at night while sailing. Some children created their own constellations by making designs in our tray with salt. They used stones as stars and connected them by leaving a mark with their fingers. ⛴️🗺️🧭
What a wonderful week full of adventures we had!
